Bread Idli Recipe

Bread idli is a variation of the traditional South Indian breakfast dish called idli, which is made with a fermented batter of rice and lentils. In this version, bread is used instead of the traditional batter to make the idlis. Here is a Bread Idli Recipe at home:


Ingredients:

  • 6 slices of white bread
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal (split bengal gram)
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black lentils)
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Bread Idli Recipe

Instructions:

  1. Remove the crust from the bread slices and cut each slice into small pieces.
  2. In a blender, combine the bread pieces, grated coconut, water, and salt and blend until a smooth paste is formed.
  3. Transfer the paste to a bowl and set aside.
  4. In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them pop.
  5. Add the chana dal and urad dal to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  6. Add the green chilies to the pan and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  7. Add the bread and coconut paste to the pan and stir to combine. Add the water and salt and stir again.
  8. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the mixture has thickened and is no longer sticky.
  9. Preheat a steamer or idli maker. Grease the idli moulds with oil or ghee.
  10. Scoop a spoonful of the bread mixture into each mould and smooth the top with the back of a spoon.
  11. Place the moulds in the steamer or idli maker and steam for 10-15 minutes or until the idlis are cooked through.
  12. Remove the idlis from the moulds and serve hot with chutney or sambar.
