Bread Idli Recipe

Bread idli is a variation of the traditional South Indian breakfast dish called idli, which is made with a fermented batter of rice and lentils. In this version, bread is used instead of the traditional batter to make the idlis. Here is a Bread Idli Recipe at home:

  • 6 slices of white bread
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal (split bengal gram)
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black lentils)
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  2. In a blender, combine the bread pieces, grated coconut, water, and salt and blend until a smooth paste is formed.
  3. Transfer the paste to a bowl and set aside.
  4. In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and let them pop.
  5. Add the chana dal and urad dal to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  6. Add the green chilies to the pan and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  11. Place the moulds in the steamer or idli maker and steam for 10-15 minutes or until the idlis are cooked through.
