Ingredients:
- 1 cup black peas (Kala vatana), soaked overnight and pressure cooked
- 1 onion, finely chopped

- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2 dried red chilies
- 2 tablespoons chopped curry leaves
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
Instructions:
- Soak the black peas overnight and then pressure cook them until they are tender.
- In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and dried red chilies. Once the seeds start to crackle, add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add minced garlic, grated ginger and curry leaves and sauté for a minute.
- Add grated coconut, sambar powder, turmeric powder and salt to taste and sauté for 2-3 minutes or until the coconut turns light brown.
- Add the cooked black peas and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
- Serve the Kala Vatana Usal with rice or roti.
Note: Some variations of the recipe may use Goda masala or Kokum instead of sambar powder.
